Breakthrough Starshot, announced in 2016, planned to push gram-scale chips on four-metre mirror sails with a 100-gigawatt laser array on the ground, reaching a fifth of the speed of light in minutes, toward Alpha Centauri and its planet Proxima b. Nothing has been built and the programme was put on hold in 2025, but no fundamental flaw was found in the physics.

A mushroom is only the fruit of a fungus. The real fungus lives underground: mycelium, a web of white threads far thinner than a human hair, growing from their tips, branching again and again, and wrapping round crumbs of soil and dead leaf until the forest floor is knitted into one mat. In 2014 MoMA PS1 in Queens, New York, picked architect David Benjamin and his studio The Living to build its summer pavilion, and he wanted bricks that were grown instead of fired in a kiln. Ecovative, a company in upstate New York that already grew packaging from fungus, chopped up corn stalks left over from harvest, mixed in the fungus and packed it into moulds. In five days the threads knitted the chunks into solid bricks, which were then dried so the fungus stopped growing. About 10,000 of them, tested by engineers at Arup, became Hy-Fi: three twisted chimneys about 12 metres tall, topped with shiny mirror-film bricks (the very moulds the bricks grew in) that threw sunlight down inside. It opened at the end of June 2014, and when summer ended the bricks were composted and the soil went to community gardens. Now NASA Ames, where Lynn Rothschild's team grows blocks from reishi fungus, is studying how to fly dormant fungus to the Moon or Mars and grow shelters on site. For now it is lab work on Earth.

The biggest waterfall on Earth is hidden under the sea, between Greenland and Iceland. In the Denmark Strait, a ridge about 600 m below the surface holds back the Arctic's coldest water (below 2 °C). Cold water is heavier, so it spills over the ridge and slides down into the deep Atlantic: a drop of about 3,500 m, more than three times Angel Falls. Over 3 million cubic metres go over the edge every second, more than 1,000 Niagara Falls. Earth's spin pushes the flow to the right, so it hugs Greenland's slope around Cape Farewell, then creeps south along the bottom of the Atlantic, past the equator.

Its lengths are Fibonacci numbers, it never repeats, it never has two 1s in a row or three 0s, and there are about 1.618 zeros for every one: the golden ratio.

Draw it one step per digit, turning on every 0 (left on even steps, right on odd), and you get the Fibonacci word fractal. 75,025 steps, and the line never crosses itself.

On April 8, 1982, Dan Shechtman saw rings of ten bright dots in his electron microscope, a pattern textbooks said no crystal could make. He was handed a textbook, asked to leave his research group, and Linus Pauling, as Shechtman remembers it, told a conference "there are no quasi-crystals, just quasi-scientists." The crystal was real: ordered, but never repeating. Physicists still use the Fibonacci word as the simplest model of a quasicrystal. Shechtman won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, on his own.

Metamorphic Mineral Formation — Beginners Edition In this short, we look at how new minerals can form when existing rocks are subjected to changing conditions underground. We cover how heat, pressure and fluids can trigger chemical reactions and rearrange atoms without completely melting the rock, allowing new minerals to crystallise. We also look at minerals such as garnet, kyanite and staurolite, and how they can give geologists clues about the temperatures and pressures a rock experienced during its history.
