Filipinos just don't have anything in common with the East Asians so there is very little reason to be lumped together.

@rr

Filipinos are way more Anglicized, Westernized and Latinized than the rest of Asia.

I think only a small number of Filipino Americans "claimed" to be Hispanics.  But I doubt they truly believed their claims.  It's more of trying to fit in/be accepted, in areas of heavy Hispanic population since some do have Spanish admixtures.

Most Filipino Americans I know considered themselves Asians or Pacific Islanders, but the latter seems to be phased out since I haven't heard that claim in many years.

@olive-juice Pinoys have a few Spanish & Nahuatl loan words in their language which is unique in my opinion. However, I don't consider them fully Hispanic even though I like them generally. If Filipinos are Hispanic then I am Asian.

@jose I can testify to you that that 99% of our people considers ourselves are Austronesians from South east asia. 1% of Filipinos claiming to be Hispanics usually are the minority that actually speaks Spanish.

@olive-juice we have a forgotten hispanic heritage. Not too long ago Spanish used to be the official language before it was replaced with English.

It's easier for Filipinos to learn Spanish since there are already alot of Spanish Loanwords in Filipino.

Interesting. As a pure Pinay with an Iberian surname, Garcia, I don't even have to prove that we have Hispanic roots.  We never claimed to be Hispanic nor try to fit in any other culture.  We easily blend in. It's how we are built. We adapt easily to any culture and society.

Seryoso?

I think we're gearing more into being brown Americans and SEA KPOP nation. Forget about learning Spanish.
