The term "Rapa Iti tiki" refers to the traditional carvings and cultural figures associated with Rapa Iti (Little Rapa) island in French Polynesia. While the island is less famous for its carvings than its namesake, Rapa Nui(Easter Island), it has a rich cultural history including unique traditional art and ancient fortifications.

Cultural Context
  • Rapa Iti is the southernmost and most isolated inhabited island in the Austral archipelago of French Polynesia.
  • The islanders developed a distinct culture and language (the Rapa language).
  • While large stone statues (moai) are characteristic of Rapa Nui, Rapa Iti is historically known for its ancient hilltop fortifications, or pa, built for protection against rival clans.
  • Traditional Rapa Iti art includes carved wooden "god images" or figures. These carvings are distinct from the well-known Rapa Nuimoai kavakava(emaciated male figures) but share the Polynesian connection to ancestral power and knowledge (tiki symbolize power, knowledge, wisdom, and wealth across Polynesian cultures).

Visual Examples

Images available of Rapa Iti focus primarily on the island's dramatic landscape and ancient fortress ruins rather than specific, widely recognized tiki figures. The carvings most often associated with the general "Rapa Nui tiki" search query are the distinctive moai kavakava from Easter Island.

Ancient Pyramid & 80 Star Mounds Revealed in Samoa with LIDAR Technology

The Pyramid in Samoa may not one of the more famous ones in the world, especially when compared to the Great Pyramids of Giza or the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan. Standing 12 meters high, the Pulemelei Mound is the largest megalithic monument in Samoa. In 2017, a LIDAR scan revealed something shocking. Aside from the area that was previously mapped, researchers uncovered an extensive network of housing and walkways, including over 80 star mounds. Most of these are located in difficult to reach areas, or have been buried under the island’s shrubbery over the years.

7 Lost Megalithic Cities of Micronesia & the Pacific Islands

Some of the strangest megalithic monuments are the ones found in the most remote areas of the world – the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This includes the lost civilisation and sunken city of Nan Madol in Micronesia, the Pulemelei Pyramid in Samoa, and of course, the famed Easter Island Moai. Of all stages of ancient human migration, tackling something as colossal as the Pacific Ocean is easily among the most challenging. Why any of these people left their native homelands to explore the vast expanses of the open ocean remains a mystery. While there is some archaeological data on the settling of the major Pacific islands, much of it is still open to debate.

The Great Pyramid of Toniná in Chiapas is one of Mexico’s most overlooked archaeological wonders. Rising more than 75 meters (246 feet), this massive structure is actually taller than the famous Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan. Built on seven platforms, it symbolizes the Mayan belief in the ascent to the underworld. Toniná, a powerful Mayan city and rival of Palenque, boasts rich history and stunning architecture, making it a must-see for those fascinated by ancient civilizations.

Archaeologists find a rare artifact

The Hand of Irulegi is a bronze artifact shaped like a human right hand, discovered in 2021 near Irulegi in Navarre, Spain. Dating to the 1st century BC, it is over 2,000 years old and features an inscription in an ancient form of the Basque language. The inscription’s first word, “sorioneku,” is similar to the modern Basque word for “good fortune,” making this the oldest known written example of Basque and a significant find for the region’s linguistic and cultural history.
