Raffaele Cardinali (also known as Rafael Cardinali Lazzarini) was an Italian sailor who famously became a permanent resident of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) after surviving a historic shipwreck in 1897. [1]

Originally from Viareggio, Tuscany, he was a crew member on the French merchant ship Apolline Emilie. The vessel crashed near a section of the island known as Motu Taka Rua. Unable to leave, Cardinali integrated deeply into the local Polynesian community. The islanders came to know him by his Rapanui name, "Nikorao Hiva". [1, 2]

Retrato a caballo del italiano Rafael Cardinali Lazzarini, quien cambiaría su nombre a “Nicolás” y sería conocido entre los isleños como “Nikorao Hiva”. Originario de Viareggio (Toscana), sobrevivió al naufragio del buque Apolline Emilie en 1897 en el sector de Rapa Nui conocido como Motu Taka Rua. Desde entonces se quedó en la isla a vivir. Tuvo una hija con Magdalena Pakomio, llamada María Ángela y apodada “Karamera”. Falleció en 1936.
