What Was Here Before New Mexico?

 

Before it was called New Mexico, a friar renamed the whole region in a single afternoon. He piled up stones, planted a cross, and called it the New Kingdom of Saint Francis. Nobody uses that name now. In the same document, that man claimed three kingdoms he had never walked into. Two of them turned out to be real places you can still visit. The third one — the one he called the largest of them all — was written off as imaginary and quietly dropped out of the books. Except somebody printed its coordinates in 1677. Longitude and latitude, in an ordinary reference table, for a kingdom that officially never existed. As far as I can tell, nobody has ever converted them. So I did. And the number does not land where the textbooks say to look. This one goes through Marcos de Niza's 1539 report, the Coronado expedition, the 1714 geography that closed the case, and the layered history of the ground at Groom Lake — the mining claims, the airfield, and the fifty-eight years before anyone admitted the place was there. If you know your way around seventeenth-century tables, I need your help with something. There are other entries on that page.
