Triads are mostly Cantonese people from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan., They consider themselves different from the mainland Chinese. So, I think they will only protect their fellow Cantonese.

Chinese mentality (even in the criminal underworld) is very different from ours, they will usually avoid problems instead of facing them head-on.

They will only fight battles where they can see themselves winning or have something to gain.
