Senior in Vancouver's Chinatown attacked with bear spray in incident police say may be racially motivated

Police say an 87-year-old was attacked near Pender Street and Columbia Street Friday morning

Vancouver police released this image caught on CCTV after they say an 87-year-old man in Vancouver's Chinatown was verbally assaulted and bear-sprayed by a suspect on Friday May 20, 2022. (Vancouver Police Department)

The Vancouver Police Department says an attack on an 87-year-old Chinatown resident on Friday morning appears to be racially motivated.

According to police, the senior was out for a morning walk and was standing near a bus stop close to the intersection of Pender Street and Columbia Street when a man came up to him around 11:40 a.m. PT Friday.

The suspect allegedly made racist comments and bear-sprayed the senior in the face. The suspect then ran away, while nearby business staff and passersby helped the victim, said police.

"[The victim] was traumatized by the incident, but has non-life-threatening injuries," Cst. Tania Visintin said in a statement. "Every indication is that this incident was completely unprovoked and may have been fueled by anti-Asian hate."

On May 24, Vancouver police released a new photo of the suspect, asking anyone who knows him to call 911. (Vancouver Police Department)

Police said community members they have spoken to for the investigation believe the attack may have been motivated by people speaking out about crime and safety in Chinatown.

VPD say there was a 425 per cent spike in anti-Asian hate crimes between 2019 and 2021, and say the force's hate crimes unit is now investigating the case.

The attacker was caught on CCTV, according to police, who are asking the public to help identify him.

He is described as being between 30 and 40 years old and standing about six feet or 1.8 metres tall. He was wearing a black jacket, dark coloured pants, grey baseball cap, and grey shoes at the time of the incident. The suspect was also carrying a black backpack.

Anyone who has information or anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call VPD at 604-717-4034.

May 24, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA—A married couple who now leaves behind two young children were killed after being struck by a car involved in a high-speed chase with police in south Sacramento on Saturday morning, May 21.

The Sacramento County coroner identified the victims as 46-year-old Tien Le and 54-year-old Binh Nguyen.

Family members said the couple were nail technicians in the Roseville area and leaves behind a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old. They were out getting coffee when they were struck and killed by another driver who was being chased by police, reports KCRA3.

“I miss him,” Nguyen’s mother Phuong Hoang said. “And I will always remember what he would do for me and my husband.”

Another relative, Son Dang, said his brother-in-law was “a very friendly and lovely person, and his wife also.”

It all started when Sacramento police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on two cars that were “driving recklessly and endangering the community in the area.” Both vehicles led officers on a chase for about half a mile just before 8:45 a.m., according to KCRA3.

That’s when one of the cars crashed into an uninvolved car at Stockton Blvd and 65th Street, police said.

Both Tien Le and Binh Nguyen were killed while the driver of the speeding car sustained major injuries and was taken to the hospital, according to the CHP.

The other car involved in the chase fled the area and has not been located.

Police said a total of “26 seconds elapsed from the time officers activated their overhead lights and sirens until the fatal collision occurred.”

CHP told KCRA3 that the crash marks the third deadly car crash in the greater Sacramento area in a single week.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP’s south Sacramento unit at 916-897-5600 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Anonymous tips can also be submitted using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app.
