Police in San Gabriel, Calif., are looking for three men accused of robbing two Asian American women at a 99 Ranch Market over the weekend.

What happened: The suspects first robbed one of the victims inside the store before targeting the second victim while fleeing the scene.

  • The robberies occurred at around 8:41 p.m. on Saturday in the store located at 140 W. Valley Blvd. in San Gabriel Square. The first incident, which was caught on surveillance video, saw one of the suspects grab the victim’s purse as she stood next to a checkout counter.

  • The victim, who held onto her purse, was dragged around as the suspect fled for the exit with two accomplices. The woman suffered cuts to her face, arm and leg, KTLA reported.

  • On their way to their car in the store’s parking lot, the trio robbed another victim of her purse. It is unclear whether she sustained any injuries.

Investigation underway: Police are now looking for the suspects, whom they described as African American males in their 20s.

  • Authorities suspect the incidents were strong-armed robberies without any weapons. They also think they were isolated incidents.

  • However, a witness who spoke to CBS LA is convinced that the trio had targeted the supermarket, which is frequented by Asian customers. The suspects allegedly wandered around before robbing the victims.

Hate crimes increased by 31% in California last year, with attacks against Asian Americans up by 107%, according to a report released Wednesday by the state attorney general’s office.

In March and April 2020, as stay-at-home orders prompted by the coronavirus pandemic kicked in, anti-Asian hate crimes spiked, the report said.

There were 89 hate crimes reported against Asian Americans in California last year, compared with 43 in 2019.

A hate crime is defined as a criminal act motivated at least in part by a characteristic such as race, gender or religion.

Hate crimes against Black people constituted a majority of those reported last year and were up by 87%.

Last year “wasn’t just about a deadly virus. It was about an epidemic of hate,” Rob Bonta, the state’s first Filipino American attorney general, said at a news conference Wednesday in Oakland Chinatown.

Despite the huge increases last year, state Justice Department officials say that hate crimes are still likely underreported.

Carl Chan, president of the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, called on the public to “please come forward.”

“Don’t be afraid. We have to be united,” he said.

A restaurant owner from Tukwila, Washington, is speaking out after being shot 11 times,Q13 Foxreports.

Tony So was closing up his restaurant, Palace Korean BBQ, around 9:45 p.m. on June 4. He walked one of his female employees to her car, something he does to make sure his female employees are safe.

A few minutes later, when So walked to his car he was confronted by the suspect who held a gun.

“Almost immediately as I sat down, the gun was in my neck,” So toldQ13Fox. “Without even thinking, I grabbed the gun. He said something to me, but I don’t remember. I just wanted the gun out of my face.”

So was then shot 11 times. Police say that the shooting occurred in the 200 block of Strander Boulevard,KOMO Newsreports. The suspects are two men and a woman. They believe it was an attempted robbery, although the suspects did not take anything.

Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for So’s medical expenses. So will remain in a wheelchair for six months, but he plans to live life to the fullest.

“I’m not going to waste it,” So toldQ13 Fox. “I don’t want to live in hate, I just want to be happy. I don’t need much anymore. I realize that now. I don’t need anything. I just need the love of my family.”
