15-Year-Old Arrested for Murdering Asian Businesswoman

ST. PAUL, Minnesota—A 15-year-old has been arrested in the “random,” fatal shooting of a 34-year-old businesswoman in her vehicle in St. Paul last week, reports Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

Julia (Yuliya) Li was driving in the Payne-Phalen area when the “suspect opened fire, taking her life,” police spokesman Steve Linders stated on Tuesday, February 22.

Authorities responded to the 1000 block of Payne Avenue around 6:45 p.m. last Wednesday. Li was taken to Regions Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Minneapolis police officers arrested the 15-year-old suspect Tuesday afternoon in Minneapolis. He is currently being held in Hennepin County on suspicion of second-degree murder and other crimes allegedly committed in Hennepin County, reports Twin Cities.

The 15-year-old suspect is also being charged with murder in Ramsey County and prosecutors filed a motion to have the teen certified to stand trial as an adult.

Li joined H.B. Fuller, a publicly-traded Fortune 1000 company headquartered in Vadnais Heights, in a marketing role back in July 2017. She recently worked as a global business director and also led the company’s Amazon business project, according to Twin Cities.

“This tragic, senseless violence brought an end to the life of a bright, well-respected, committed, hard-working professional who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her,” said H.B. Fuller President and CEO Jim Owens in a statement.

 

“It is even more gut-wrenching to learn that the young suspect had committed other violent crimes but had been released,” Owens’ statement continued. “Our mayors, government officials, and judicial officials need to create a system that does not allow young criminals to terrorize our community. Had they done a better job, Julia would be alive today.”

The 15-year-old suspect has an “extensive and violent criminal history,” Linders stated.

Li was originally from Kazakhstan in central Asia and moved to the U.S. in 2007 to study at the University of Minnesota. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics and global studies.

An Asian-American dancer en route to a first-performance celebration at New York’s Public Theater was attacked Wednesday night in what theater officials describe as the latest “disgusting and heartbreaking” incident “in a long history of violence against Asian Americans.”

The dancer, who was not identified, was attacked near Seward Park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a short distance from the Chinatown apartment where Christina Yuna Lee was murdered on Feb. 13 in a violent attack that was the latest in a surge of high-profile crimes involving Asian-American victims.

In Wednesday’s incident, a performer with the Chinatown dance troupe Yip’s Dragon Style Kung Fu and Lion Dance was on his way to perform with the group as part of the festivities celebrating the first preview performance of the play The Chinese Lady at the Public Theater. The dance troupe had been invited to perform in the lobby of the Public’s Lower East Side venue (the dancers are not part of The Chinese Lady company).

A Texas man has pleaded guilty to hate crime charges for attacking an Asian family, slashing open the face of a six-year-old child with a knife during the 2020 assault in a store.

The Midland man also punched the father of the child and attacked a Sam’s Club Warehouse employee because he wanted to kill the child and the worker was preventing him from doing so, authorities said.

Jose Gomez, 21, of Midland admitted that he believed the Asian family was responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic because he thought they were Chinese.

Gomez pleaded guilty to three counts of committing a hate crime. He faces man faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on each charge and a US$250,000 fine.

An Asian woman who was attacked in New York by a man with a rock has died after spending approximately 10 weeks in a coma, her family said on Monday.

GuiYing Ma, 62, was sweeping the sidewalk outside her home in Jackson Heights in Queens on 26 November when a man allegedly struck her head with a rock, police say.

 

Ma is the fourth Asian American in two months to die in New York as a result of violence against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

According to data compiled by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, anti-AAPI hate crime was up 339% nationally last year. Many such attacks have been motivated by resentment over the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in China.
