For example, do you guys think an Indian-American gets treated better in everyday society than a Chinese-American? Or a Japanese-American? Or a Filipino? Or a Pacific Islander?

__________

Not all Indian-Americans are treated better. The Punjabi-Sikh Americans are often target of racist/domestic terrorism attacks because of their turbans. Remember the Wisconsin Gurdwara shootings?

And the Sikh who was shot to death after 9/11.

Absolutely! Generally, colorism is still powerful and people who are darker skinned or just more degrees further from the euro-centric ideals of beauty in the west will likely experience bad treatment more often than those who are lighter skinned/closer to white ideals.

Important to remember however, that being treated "better" is still inexorably part of the "model minority" myth and people who might be being treated "better" might still suffer just being treated as an "other" or stereotypical expectations.

I don't think if it's so much better treatment as much as it is fetishization. I think Japanese-Americans and Korean-Americans get fetishized more because of the popularity of their native countries' pop cultures (anime, Kpop, Kdramas). I've met a few non-Asian men who are super into the idea of maid cafes in Japan and they keep insisting that it's not sexual, but I think it's creepy nonetheless. I also have friends/acquaintances who have a no dating Asian men policy but they make exceptions for Korean guys because they think they're better-looking. Somehow they really think the average Korean guy looks like Jungkook from BTS (lol).

East Asians probably get treated better in that people won't say "you're not really Asian" like they might to a Indian-American or a Filipino person. There's also light-skinned privilege and Ali Wong's joke about "fancy Asians" versus "jungle Asians". Not to say that East Asians don't face things like Sinophobia or jokes about slanty eyes, eating cats/dogs, etc.

Definitely this! East Asians are generally treated much, much better than SEA people are for a whole host of reasons, such as light-skinned privilege, the stereotype that Chinese-looking people are academically smart, and the general trend that East Asians earn more money than their SEA counterparts on average.

I also think a new trend to note is that Koreans and Japanese Americans are definitely treated better than Chinese... with the rise of China's geopolitical influence and how much they influence Western politics, as well as China's newfound aggression, people seem to be really unable to separate the concepts of Chinese people with the Chinese government.

Like, on Reddit, on almost any popular post where Chinese people are mentioned, no matter how innocent, some guy's gonna go into the comments and be like "BUT FREE TIBET" or "TIANANMEN SQUARE" as if yes, every Chinese person were collectively responsible for the actions of the CCP. It's kinda sad.

Yes, for sure Chinese-Americans get treated worse than Japanese or Koreans. Comments about how we’re cheaters, steal copyrighted material, dirty Communists, spit on the ground in public places, noisy tourists, have greasy food, etc. I attribute a lot of this to the US being allies with Japan and South Korea, but not China. And I bet a lot more Americans have traveled to Japan and South Korea than China (which requires a visa) so they have more exposure to those cultures.

The amount of Sinophobia on reddit really gets to me sometimes. How do y'all cope with it?

When on desktop with RES I just filter certain keywords like China, Chinese, CCP, etc. When I want to read news I just go to news sites directly. You're not gonna get a valuable, neutral input on reddit anyway. Far, far too biased and filled with double standards to the brim.

I try to think that the people who make those types of comments are just ignorant. On the Subtle Asian Traits group on Facebook, there was a Korean-American guy who was calling out other Korean people for using racial slurs against Chinese people, so at least there are people who are trying to fight it.

I wouldn’t really say it’s Sinophobia. It’s more like anti-CCP phobia. People don’t really have a problem with Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Singapore even though many Han Chinese live there too.

I disagree, I literally have screenshots of hot takes saying how all Chinese are dirty cheaters etc.

Maybe a better term would be anti-mainland China. I’ve only heard good things when people talk about Taiwan, HK, or Singapore even though they’re Chinese too.

Taiwan definitely gets treated better than Japan, considering every Japan-related thread consists of people spewing nonsense about how the Japanese people don’t learn about their atrocities in WW2...even though students literally take field trips to the Philippines and Singapore to visit war memorials for their massacres. Either that or “hurr durr Japanese women are treated like shit there” after every rape accusation there, even though it rarely happens.

Depends on the area. Growing up Japanese American in Detroit was absolutely brutal. Also, acceptance among Asian Americans hasn’t been great for me. I haven’t met more than a few Japanese Americans in my life and a lot of the Chinese and Korean Americans I’ve met are cliquish about race. Plus there’s a lot of anti-Japanese Asian Americans because of Japan’s terrible history. I’ve actually had an easier time blending with black and latinx communities.

Similar experiences here as a Japanese-American. I’ve had an easier time integrating into white communities than Korean or Chinese American groups. Filipinos and Indians were always cool with me though.

every Chinese person were collectively responsible for the actions of the CCP.

What's ironic is that Americans share more blame of their Government's actions e.g. foreign wars, simply because of their so called "Freedom" from democracy.

I mean you guys literally chose your leader, whereas if the Chinese can't choose theirs, how can they be held accountable?

people won't say "you're not really Asian" like they might to a Indian-American or a Filipino person

I feel like East Asian-passing Filipinos are the least likely to get this as much as other Filipinos because I had a Filipino friend in elementary school and one of my former housemate from college was Filipino and both were East Asian-passing (but had no East Asian ancestry from what I knew).

This is one of the main reasons why disaggregate, data about Asian Americans. Due to the fact we are all not equal. Simply if you look at the comparison between both SE Asians and E Asian there stories are rather different.

It's a really loaded question with a lot of little caveats here and there.

Generally speaking, Asians from former English colonies and assimilated Asians are treated better than their Asian immigrant or non-assimilated Asian-American (lived in ethnic enclaves). It generally comes down to communication. I feel all Asians have to jump the same wall to prove that they can be trusted and be understood when communicating.

Sort. East Asians for sure gets treated better than all of the other Asian groups. Only because those countries are first world compared. Indian Americans are pretty successful but most American media lump them with Muslims/Islam only because they are brown. And so on.

At the same time, Indian Americans don’t suffer from the “bamboo ceiling” in the workplace, which is common with east asians

Indian Americans don’t suffer from the “bamboo ceiling”

They do but they aren't affected by it as bad because of their history as an English colony. To paraphrase, the advantage of being a former English colony means they are better skilled in English and have a better understanding of Western social cues/norms.

Most of East Asia were pretty much isolated from Western society until the 90's.

Yes. East Asians are treated better than Southeast Asians which are treated better than South Asians. Christians are treated better than non-Muslims which are treated better than Muslim Asians. Mixed Eurasians are treated better than Light-skinned Asians which are treated better than dark-skinned Asians. The previous statement can also apply to our own community, along with men being treated better than women, and skinny people being treated better than fat people.

Mixed Eurasian who grew up in a predominately Asian city. This almost never happened to me.

Southern California. White people never treated me any differently than the other East Asian kids, but other East Asians would usually talk down to me because I wasn't "Asian enough". It's probably why I'm baffled to the idea that mixed Asians are somehow more accepted than the other Asian races because my upbringing told me otherwise.

Maybe if you lived in a predominantly white city like most Americans...?

I'm mixed white/Vietnamese and lived most of my life in Arkansas. I remember kids making comments about how I was ok since I was "basically white". White people definitely treated me better than they treated other minorities, especially the more white passing I became.

I definitely would've had it a lot worse if I grew up in a predominately white city. I don't look 100% Chinese but at the same time I don't look white at all.

It's also frustrating when some people who aren't Eurasian or mixed race assume they know everything about us and that we're automatically treated better than them. Fetishization isn't the same as acceptance. Their insecurities don't give them the right to treat people like us like shit; that makes them no different than white supremacists.

This sub doesn’t care about the experiences of Asians who aren’t on the east or west coast. It’s ridiculous you’re getting downvoted just for sharing your actual experience.

Mixed Eurasians are treated better than Light-skinned Asians

I might qualify this a bit. If a Eurasian passes as white or clearly Asian mix they’ll be treated better (in general) than if they pass more as say, Hispanic, Arab, or south Asian.

People downvoting me might clarify what they object to, so that I might be aware of it?

I was white washed too during my school days.   Rarely did I meet a fellow Japanese person unless they were part of the FOB crowd.   This non-English speaking Japanese search hard among the crowds to find each other then stick to themselves like  bees to  a hive.  They do this for no other reason than lack of choices for friends.  On the other hand, the the American born Nisei group can be divided into two groups: the ones that stay within the Nesei people with some mingling with another Asian-Americans or the other group who spend their time mostly with whites. This white washed Japanese have very little contact with other Asians and generally are not in touch with their Asian culture.   I was  white washed but later reverted back to an FOB.   Well, it is what it is.   Lol.

Yes without a doubt.

East Asians> Southeast Asians > West Asians > SW Asians > South Asians

East Asians - the lightest of all the asian groups, considered the most intelligent, hygienic, have the dominance through economy, pop culture, academics. Considered the most attractive as well. East Asians are treated the best among asians. I've witnessed this throughout high school and college lol. Asian fetish, whether its after asian guys/girls, culture or anything, it's very widespread. I thought it was only white guys, but many ethnicities fetishize east asians and both genders do it.

South East Asians - they're just seen as the swarthier East Asians. Many filipinos have positive stereotypes due to their dancing culture, are considered relatively intelligent (though less than east asians), and have the coolness factor. Considered quite attractive as well and are part of the asian fetish. Bangkok is the most visited city in the world and we all know why lol

West Asians - They also have issues with terrorist stereotypes, culture based issues, gender inequality which would make people avoid them to an extent, but the ones that are westernized can easily pass as southern euro and latino so they'd be treated very well, though less fairly still than east/se asians imo.

SW Asians - swarthier west asians. similar to SE asian/East asian analogy, the SW asians like gulf arabs would have similar stereotypes associated with them as west asians, but they're also darker and more ethnic looking. some of them look pseudo indian as well.

South Asians- probably the worst hit asians by far. Smelly, hairy, ugly, shitskin, streetshitter, poor, weak, etc. The list goes on. I dont really want to expand on this lol but there's a general consensus that indians are treated the worst among asian groups. Its a no brainer. Pretty much the opposite of what East asians face, except for the small dick part. Desis have that as well unfortunately as a cherry on top.

this is BS! you get treated based on your status in society.

you get stereotyped based on the reputation that your race is known for.
