I don't get how Americans think? this diseases is a threat to humanity. Everyone on the planet needs to work together. It only takes one person to put humanity at risk.  

Why can't Americans wait until this disease has been defeated first?

I don't think they're as worried about the virus, as they are worried about winning relative to China. If China had 200k deaths, they would have good relations with China.
