Ancient MONOLITHIC Salt Evaporation Ponds | Salinas prehispánicas de San Miguel Ixtapan
Near the village of San Miguel Ixtapan, in central Mexico, are found hundreds of monolithic salt evaporation ponds carved directly from the banks of the Aquiagua and San Felipe rivers. Once nearly as precious as gold, salt has been extracted in the area for thousands of years - an activity that continues to this day employing techniques all but identical to those found in the Andes of Peru, suggesting once more the possibility of prehispanic transoceanic contact between Mexico and South America.
