Architecture what is the purpose of exploring mars?

NASA wants to terraform planet Mars and therefore one day they could send astronauts to Mars and have them lived there.  They also want to construct space ships on planet Mars and so that the astronauts themselves could return back to planet Earth.

Terraforming Mars might be hundreds of years away because energy alone for traveling is already a problem.

Terraforming Mars completely will take a few centuries.

NASA has plans terraforming small areas instead and creating a Bio-Dome on it for the astronauts to live inside where they could remove their space-suit and breathe artificial air. They'll send robots first to construct the Bio-Dome and other infrastructures and this process will take less than a century and by then people could finally travel to Mars and live there without wearing a space-suit, a helmet and a breathing apparatus. A Bio-Dome allows them to move freely around compared to a spacecraft.  

They'll probably send the astronauts the same way they sent satellites to planet Mars by using gravity and some fuel energy.  It takes around 6 months for the spacecraft to arrive. 

it's very hard to create wide spread life on Mars because it lacks a magnetic field to shield radiation. for a human colony you need keep up an artificial magnetic field.
