Germany and France set the model for the rest of E.U to follow and the E.U had a common enemy to unite under, which was the Soviet Union at that time.
For ASEAN, the only countries that are anti-China are Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia while the rest of the ASEAN countries are more of a neutral state.

In my opinion, it's only us who are open-minded with different cultures. most of the intercontinental southeast Asians like the Vietnamese & Cambodians are very nationalistic to care about unity.

Cambodians and Vietnamese have a territorial dispute so it will be a difficult problem to solve through dialogue.
