The modern yo-yo was introduced to the market by a Filipino.
Although the Philippines are often sidelined in the Western media as a small, less-developed country, they are home to a wonderfully diverse population that has played its own role in world history and culture. Among many contributions to modern life, Filipinos introduced the world to the commercially produced yo-yo toy and were involved in inventing the karaoke machine. But they know how to do more than just play -- the latest Filipino inventions have the power to make the world a better place through science.

Low-Cost Landslide Sensor
Around the world, hilly areas with heavy rainfall are vulnerable to landslides, which can have devastating effects on communities. To reduce this threat to human life, the University of the Philippines has developed a high-tech landslide sensor that costs only one-sixtieth the price of previously available devices. The sensor is buried deep in the ground in places with a history of landslides, and transmits detailed data on ground movement back to the Philippine National Institute of Geological Studies every 10 seconds.

Disaster Response Tablet
The Philippines are hit by natural disasters every year, from typhoons to earthquakes to flooding. As part of a new program to coordinate disaster relief, the national Department of Science and Technology has introduced a specially designed tablet computer for communication between disaster relief agencies and local governments down to the neighborhood level. Housed in a protective casing, the tablet is optimized for rapidly collecting on-the-spot local data on disaster effects and responses. It can also receive warnings and advisories in response from the command center.

Dengue Fever Prevention Trap
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that is a problem in many tropical countries. To combat it in the Philippines, the country’s Department of Science and Technology has developed a simple but effective device to reduce reproduction of the mosquito species that spreads the virus. The “ovicidal/larvicidal” trap is a simple cup filled with an organic solution and a small stick made from coconut husk. The solution has a scent that attracts female mosquitoes to lay their eggs on the stick, but once they do, the eggs and any mosquito larvae that hatch are killed by the chemical properties of the solution. The device works well enough that it has attracted interest from two other dengue-afflicted countries, Nepal and Pakistan.

Bomb Disposal Robot
Defusing bombs is dangerous work, but engineer John Judilla from the Philippines’ Mapua Institute of Technology has designed a cutting-edge robot that can do the work instead of people. Called MAC, for “Mechanical Anti-Terrorist Concept,” the robot is about 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. The robot is remotely controlled by specialists from the bomb squad, and Judilla claims its technology is better than anything else available today. City police in Makati, a suburb of Manila, are already using the robot for bomb-disposal work.
