In December 1937, the population of Nanking was estimated at 100,000 to 200,000.

The number increased to 250,000 in January 1938.
On January 9, 1938, the population was 250,000.

Shanghai dispatches quoted Chinese military leaders as announcing that Guerilla warfare on widespread battlefronts had brought increasing success against the Japanese invaders, and prevented Japanese from attempting further advances.
(Because efforts to bring in food were blocked by the Japanese, the international committee for the Nanking safety zone asserted, 250000 Chinese refugees in the former capital were facing famine conditions.)
