They Found Earth's Largest Creature in the Peruvian Desert

Did you know they found Earth's largest creature ever in the middle of the Peruvian desert? 🏜️ It’s not alive now, of course—it’s a fossil of a gigantic ancient whale called Perucetus colossus. This massive creature was as long as a basketball court and weighed more than 200 tons—making it even heavier than the blue whale, the largest animal alive today! 🐋 What’s wild is how it ended up in the desert; millions of years ago, that area was covered by a shallow sea. Scientists are still learning about how this gentle giant lived and what it ate. It’s mind-blowing to think something so huge once swam in what’s now a dry, dusty desert! 🌊

Freducci Map 1514-1515: Oldest Accurate Map of Florida's Coastline?

The Freducci Map, created between 1514 and 1515, is considered the earliest known map to depict Florida. Its significance lies in its remarkably accurate portrayal of the Florida coastline, despite limited exploration at the time. This accuracy, as argued by Jerald T. Milanich in his 1995 analysis, strongly supports the historical account of Juan Ponce de León's 1513 voyage to Florida. While the map doesn't pinpoint his exact landing site, it provides crucial information for refining potential locations by comparing its coastal features to known landmarks. The Freducci Map serves as valuable evidence of early Spanish exploration and mapping efforts in Florida, demonstrating the rapid dissemination of knowledge about the region within the European cartographic community. Milanich believes that landfall occurred north of the St John's river, marked on the map, which would make the first northern cape Anastasia island, with the two capes further south the false cape and Cape Canaveral. This interpretation challenges the traditional belief that de Leon landed in St. Augustine or as far south as Melbourne beach.
