They Saved the Leaning Tower of Pisa by Not Touching It.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Everyone knows the Leaning Tower of Pisa leans. Fewer people know that by 1990 it was close to falling: the seventh floor hung about four and a half meters past its own foot, the tilt was still growing every year, and after a medieval tower in Pavia collapsed in 1989, Pisa closed the tower to the public.

The problem was never the marble it was the ground: soft silt over very soft clay reaching about forty meters down, carrying roughly 14,500 tonnes of tower. And every attempt to help had made things worse. In 1838 a walkway was dug around the base to expose the foundation; groundwater rushed in on the south side and the tower lurched by more than a quarter of a degree. In 1934 cement was pumped into the foundation and the tower moved about a centimeter further south. In 1995 an attempt to replace the temporary lead counterweights with ground anchors set it moving again and was abandoned.

So the international committee flipped the problem. Instead of straightening the tower, they lowered the ground on the high (north) side: 41 slanting tubes were drilled just beneath the north edge of the foundation, and small amounts of silt around 120 liters a day at full pace were withdrawn. The silt closed each cavity on its own, the north side settled by a hair at a time, and the tower rotated back. Extraction stayed strictly north of a critical line; south of it, the same method would have tipped the tower over. (The same soil-extraction idea had earlier been used under Mexico City's cathedral.)

Between 1999 and 2001 the seventh floor moved about 44 cm back north roughly half a degree returning the tower to the inclination it had in 1838, before the first "fix". The 600–900 tonnes of lead came off one ingot at a time, and the tower reopened on 15 December 2001. In 2008 engineers reported it had stopped moving for the first time in its history; by 2018 the monitoring team reported it had straightened a further 4 cm on its own. It still leans just enough to stand.

 

A note on limits

 

· The 44 cm figure is the committee's September 2001 measurement (440 mm at the seventh floor); by reopening in December 2001 the total is usually quoted as about 45 cm.

· Sources disagree on the tower's height and foundation depth, and on the exact present tilt in degrees, so this video states none of them.

· The 1934 grouting is documented; the often-quoted number of holes and tonnes of cement could not be verified and were left out.

While earlier scholars initially believed the engraving originated entirely in the late Bronze Age (around 1400–1500 BCE), modern archaeological re-examinations have narrowed its primary creation window. Experts from the Milan University indicate that the most recognizable cartographic patterns—the "maps" themselves—were heavily engraved and stylized during the Iron Age, specifically between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE (roughly 2,400 to 2,600 years old). The engraved area spans a 4.3 × 2.4 meter section of a larger 9-meter rock slab and contains 109 distinct figures. Archaeologists interpret these geometric patterns as an early attempt to model a physical territory. Key features include: [1, 2, 3]

The Bedolina Map (formally Rock 1 of Bedolina) is a famous engraved prehistoric rock which is part of the Camonica Valley (Alps, Italian side, Lombardy region) petroglyph complex. It is known as one of the most ancient topographic maps,[1] interpreted as a depiction of cultivated plots, mountain paths and villages. The locality of Bedolina pertains to the Capo di Ponte municipality (BS-I), near the hamlet of Pescarzo. The area is included in the Seradina-Bedolina Archaeologic park, lying on a prominent terrace on the right slope of the Camonica valley, at an altitude of 530 m above the sea level. The rock, a flat surface of Permian sandstone (Verrucano of Lombardy) polished by the Pleistocene glacier, is 9m long and 4m wide.

A total number of 109 figures[2] were carved during the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age (1000-200 BC), mainly the so-called topographic patterns[3] (dotted squares and zigzagging "paths"), warriors, animals, wooden huts, cup-marks and a Camunnian Rose. The rock has been completely recorded and studied by Miguel Beltrán Llorís (Beltrán Llorís 1972) and more recently by Cristina Turconi, for the Milan University.[4] According to the most recent studies and to the close examination of figures and superimpositions, the best known engraved patterns of the Bedolina Map, precisely "maps", likely pertain to the Iron Age, and more in detail to the central centuries of the 1st millennium BC (6th-4th centuries BC).
