Mysteries of Kallachaka: A Peruvian Tower of Babel?

Join us as we explore Kallachaka, a mysterious archaeological site in the foothills of Cusco, Peru, often referred to as the "Inca Pyramid" or a Peruvian Tower of Babel. Known officially for its stepped and truncated agricultural terraces, a closer look at the advanced polygonal masonry, megalithic stonework, and mysterious Hanan pacha stone reveals a much deeper, sacred purpose. Could this site have been used to commune with the gods, honor ancestors, or act as an ancient astronomical observatory? In this video, we hike the historic Royal Inca Trail (Qhapaq Ñan), examine ancient Spanish brick ovens, analyze precision stonework reminiscent of Sacsayhuaman, and discuss the mind-blowing scale of ancient engineering in the Andes.

Could fog help address California’s water crisis?

Researchers with the Pacific Coastal Fog Research Project are studying whether the state’s coastal fog can become a reliable source of water for local ecosystems and agricultural applications. The five-year study, led by five scientists, including Cal State Monterey Bay professor Daniel Fernandez, will measure fog occurrences to better understand their patterns and how they may or may not be changing. The team has built the largest standardized fog collector network in the United States, utilizing mesh collectors that act as artificial trees to capture tiny droplets from the lower atmosphere. The researchers hope the data collected will offer insight on whether fog could become part of California’s long-term water strategy.
