I am fluent but I have an obvious American accent when I speak Vietnamese.  I am afraid that my descendants will probably not know any Vietnamese.  My husband and I mostly speak English to each other, it's just easier for us to communicate (he isn't fluent). I told my husband we have to preserve our heritage, but he is so Americanized that when I speak to him in Vietnamese he sometimes have no clue what I am talking about. His Vietnamese is getting better now since he has to speak it more at work. My parents placed me in Vietnamese school (every Sunday) for 7 years, I learned how to read and write Vietnamese thanks to them.  They also did not allow us to speak English at home.  We would get spanked or they would say I don't understand, speak Vietnamese only. I think their worst fears will come true when their grandchildren lost their mother's language.

I can't speak tagalog anymore. I'll try to learn it again.

I can't speak my mother language anymore. I did not care about it when I was young. Now that I have become a mother, I regret not taking the time to learn it.
