they're looking for permafrost near the equator. they have to find water to make a manned return trip possible. there's water in the north pole but it's too cold there and no sun. they need to find water-ice near the equator underground.
the next step is a much larger rocket CZ9, that can send 50 tons to mars compared to 7 tons right now. the rocket will also build a robotic base on the moon's south pole.
