Do you think its weird? That I don't like my own culture and western music?

For example, I found Thai music to be boring and pretty cringy. Its all about love, romance, heartbreak, couple fighting, bla bla... The music also tends to sound pretty cheesy. The same applies to most of other SE/East Asian music. To cheesy for my ears.

From Vietnam:

Hell I don't even listen to Western (literally American and British) music whether Drake, Rihanna, Khalid, Bieber, Halsey, etc. these days, they are just so boring, no creativity, same shit and overrated to me.

On the other hand, I really African music especially Afrobeats lol. Sounds so catchy and fun.

Is it strange?

I won't be surprise if I am the only person here in Thailand who listen to Afrobeats and Bongo Flava (a Tanzanian music genre) lol. I feel a bit like an alien for this tbh.

I don't even listen to Thai, other SE/East Asian or Western (literally American and British) music these days lol. I found Thai music to be too cheesy, melancholic, hopeless and the same heartbreaking gf/bf shit while Western music like Drake, Bieber, Rihanna, Khalid, etc. is so overrated, cringy and lack creativity- they just repeat the same stupid shit all over and over.

Btw the music you posted is Afrobeats. Afrobeats mainly refer to music genre that originated from Nigeria, Ghana and African diaspora in UK. One of the guy might originally be from Ghana, but his style is not Afrobeats imo.

I don't know much about Asian culture, that's why I am here. My children started to listen to K pop and I thought it was gay

Ok. I guess you never heard of the music I posted before then? Looks like most people in the US also never heard or recognize these music including Afrobeats as well except maybe African immigrants.

Yes. Native speaker. I don't like Thai music though. Too cheesy and too much drama, romantic, melancholic stuff.

NO, from time to time a Jamaican or Haitian song will hit the mainstream. the only African I know is AKON but his R&B, not afro beats.

I also found afrobeats like this song from Ghana:

And this afrobeat song from Nigeria:

Or these two songs from France (with heavy Maghrebi or SSA influence):

To be much nicer to listen to and not cringy and overrated like most western pop music today such as these two songs:

I do regularly listen to these types on the radio and music videos.  I like Club Music - Reggaeton - Urbano Musica.  It's popular among the Latino population here in America.

I like to listen to Afrobeats (originates in Nigeria, Ghana and the West African diaspora in the UK) much more than Reggaeton or other Latin American music though.

I also listen to some Bongo Flava (Tanzanian music) because I used to went to Tanzania for a semester as part of a study abroad program of my university in the US (I was literally the only Asian in the whole program lol so I stand out from the rest of the crowd quite a lot):

At times I watch Indian music videos but not as much as before.  I've never heard them on the radio stations before except maybe one song.

What song did you here? Well it makes sense though. In the US (assuming you live there, I live in Thailand), typical Western "American" and also "British" music will dominated the scene followed by Latin American music like reggaeton.

I also never heard of any of the music I posted here in the radio stations, bars or nightclubs here as people don't know them. I won't be surprised if I am probably the only person in Thailand who heard of or listen to these type of music.

I have a feeling I won't even know or heard of these music if I stayed in Thailand all my life.

Afrobeat sounds similar to Reggaeton ( Urbano Music ) but the main difference is the language.  The music videos are presented similarly also to Reggaeton music videos and I could dance to both music genre. There are lots of singers that are of African descent in Reggaeton.

I use to listen to American music all the time but less frequently in recent years.  I only know some of the current singers and their songs. I rarely watch MTV or any music videos. I do occasionally tune in to their radio stations.

I rarely listen to Filipino music but the songs they play at the bus rides are entertaining. I don't know the names of these singers and songs also.

Really? I would expected them to be different. That's interesting.

I never heard any Afrobeats when I was in the USA. In fact, I first heard them when I went to Tanzania which seems rather popular there. I don't think its popular or hardly known because I never heard them played in radio stations, in the street, store or bars/clubs. Have you heard of Afrobeats in the US or somewhere before I made this thread?

Me too. I don't even listen Western aka American/British music these days lol. Its just lacks creativity, always repeating the same theme, and nothing else. In fact, I don't even know or recognized most Western singers these days except maybe some of them.

I also listen to some Bongo Flava which is a music genre I was introduced to when I was in Tanzania. Its mostly in Swahili though which maybe why its not that popular.

And even some French Afro music:

All these music that I never heard in Thailand, anywhere else or the USA lol. I think its make me strange compared to most Thais/other Asians who love to listen to K-pop, other Asian or Western music.

Some of my favorite songs. You will never hear a Thai or any Asian person listen or prefer them over Asian or Western/American music lmao.

I've never heard of any of these songs before nor have I ever heard of Afrobeat.   This is the type of music that should be played in the states.  If they could play reggaeton, urbano music, hip hop, rap then they should play this stuff.  Some Americans will tune in to Afrobeat if they could understand the language.  Reggaeton basically entertains the Latino population because they are the main audience that could understand the music. Latino singers in reggaeton are also well known in Latin America and in several major cities in U.S.A. and therefore several radio stations in America are willing to play reggaeton because there is a large audience demand.  Afrobeat singers are not well known in the U.S from what I know.  American audience only knows American, European, Australian, Canadian and Latino singers as if other countries don't have their own music and singers to listen to. I've heard traditional African folklore music but they don't play that type of music in radio stations.

I won't be surprised or shocked if I am the only person in the whole country of Thailand who listen to these type of music.

I think the reason I know and love these type of genre is because I went to Tanzania in Africa for one semester as a part of study abroad program from my university in the US (I was literally the only Asian in the whole trip lol). I later visited Ethiopia for a month with a friend who is Ethiopian but migrated to America. I think these type of exposure to other cultures open to a lot of new stuff that other Thais or other Asians including those who went to international schools never or rarely get the chance to be exposed to them.

I think if I live in Thailand all my life or just Indonesia and the US, I won't ever know or hear these type of music.

I don't even listen to Western or Thai music these days lol.

One thing I noticed about SE/East Asian music is the cheesy or sad melancholic feeling like heartbreak, relationship breakups and stuff.

The think that I like about African music is the catchy fun tune and also the lack of sadness. Their music is often full of happiness, fun, cheerful and hope.

I also listen to some French music with Sub Saharan African or Maghrebi (North African) influences:
