perp is Robert williams, killed by police.

The armed driver who was shot and killed May 26 by a California Highway Patrol officer on Interstate 5 north of Redding has been identified as 24-year-old Robert Williams of Redding.

The man's identity was announced Friday by a team that's conducting the investigation, which also provided details leading up to the shooting.

The account says Williams armed himself with a pistol after crashing on I-5 and pointed the firearm as he advanced toward the officer and a witness. The officer shot Williams numerous times when he didn't obey commands to drop his gun, the response team said.

Here's the account by the Shasta County Multi-Agency Officer Involved Critical Incident Response Team.

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Chicago Police officer Fernanda Ballesteros, 27, has been released from the hospital after she was shot in the head during a traffic stop Wednesday in West Englewood.

Family, fellow police officers, and hospital staff gathered outside the University of Chicago Medical Center in support of Ballesteros. She was wheeled out by her partner who sprung into action -- saving her life.

"Most importantly, thank you to officer young my partner who had my back and carried me to safety.  I am forever grateful for his quick thinking and swift response. You were my guardian angel that night," Officer Ballesteros said from her hospital bed.

As CBS 2's Chris Tye reported, among the people waiting for the officer's release was Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. who greeted her with a hug. Yanez was also shot in the line of duty last August.

"It was amazing seeing her. For Fernanda, her standing up and giving me a hug. I can't even put into words -- her strength is my strength," Yanez said.

Ballesteros was emotional during her release -- blowing a kiss to family and shedding tears as bagpipes played as she was escorted to her vehicle. She said she is choosing to see the light in this dark time.

Officer Ballesteros says the strength of the brotherhood -- who showed up over 100 strong Monday -- helped her navigate the five days she never expected.

foxnews.com/us/record-police-officers-shot-killed-2021

The National Fraternal Order of Police, the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, on Wednesday reported a record number of police officers shot and killed in 2021.

As of Tuesday midnight, the FOP recorded 314 officers shot in the line of duty — 58 of whom were killed.

"We are on pace this year to see the highest number of officers shot in the line of duty in one year ever recorded," FOP president Patrick Yoes said in a Wednesday statement.

"We've already had more officers killed in the line of duty by gunfire this year than any other — and there is still one month left."

Additionally, the FOP recorded 95 ambush-style attacks so far this year – a 126% increase compared to 2020 – that resulted in 119 officers shot, 28 of whom were killed.
