Americans generally welcome international pupils, but widespread support for limits on Chinese students

Most in U.S. see international students as an asset

Although international student enrollment in the U.S. fell dramatically in 2020 because of COVID-19, during the 2019-202o school year, more than 1 million international students studied at U.S. colleges and universities, comprising 5.5% of all student enrollment in American tertiary education. And generally speaking, the U.S. public sees these students in a positive light: Eight-in-ten Americans say it is good for U.S. colleges and universities to accept international students, while just 19% think the opposite.

This sentiment is especially strong among certain subgroups in the U.S. population. Black and Hispanic Americans are more likely than White Americans to see international students as an asset. Likewise, younger people and those with a college degree say it is good for U.S. universities to accept international students. Partisanship also plays a role in views of international students. While at least two-thirds of supporters of each party see visiting students in a positive light, 92% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents hold this perspective, versus just 67% of Republicans and Republican leaners.

Since 2009, the largest share of international students in the U.S. have come from China, according to the Institute of International Education. In 2019-2020, Chinese students comprised roughly a third of international students in American colleges and universities, and the number of Chinese students in U.S. academic institutions had nearly tripled over the previous decade.

Majority of Americans support limits on Chinese students in U.S. universities

Yet, while the U.S. public generally welcomes international students, people are more divided when it comes specifically to Chinese students. A majority of Americans (55%) support limiting Chinese students studying in the U.S., including about one-in-five Americans who strongly support this idea. On the other hand, 43% oppose limitations on Chinese students, with 18% strongly opposed.

At least half of White, Black and Hispanic Americans would at least somewhat support limits on Chinese students in the U.S. Among those who have obtained a college degree, more oppose than support restricting the number of Chinese students at Americans institutions. A majority of those without a college degree are in favor.

Among Americans ages 50 and older, roughly seven-in-ten are in favor of limiting Chinese students. Those ages 30 to 49 are evenly split between support and opposition, while nearly two-thirds of Americans 18 to 29 oppose the idea. Republicans are also more likely than Democrats to favor limitations on the number of Chinese students attending U.S. college or universities.

I wouldn't say remove completely but we prefer quotas of how much foreigners universities will accept. It makes more sense for the universities to invest on Americans because in the long run educated blacks and Latinos can the taxed while foreigners have nothing to contribute except tuition money.

No it's fine this isn't a secret. There's actually nothing wrong with universities only accepting Americans. If I were to flip the coin, I am sure China doesn't want foreigners flocking to their universities.

Graph 1 shows that Hispanics are tied for second while Graph 2 shows they are in second and therefore they are not the most who wants Asians removed in schools.

I agree but this survey in particular any person who is either ethnically related to Spanish Iberian ancestry or they speak Spanish would be considered Latino Hispanic.  It's doubtful however that the other Latino groups such as Brazilians and several Native Indians in America were included in the sample survey since they are not considered Hispanics.

I agree but I doubt Brazilians/Portuguese people were included in the survey.  It's a general survey so they wanted to generalize people and therefore Brazilians were considered Hispanics even though they do not speak Spanish.  The survey should've called them Latinos.

If they did count Brazilians then they're differentiating them from other Latinos base on language.  Brazilians actually do speak a Latin language but not Hispanic language.  Brazilians and Hispanics are Latinos and both should've been place in the same ethnic group category because white or black is base on color while Hispanic is base on language primarily. There are some whites and some blacks that should be considered Hispanics also and therefore they should've been included in the Hispanic category instead.

Btw, we really do not know if they actually participated in the survey since it could've been a small sample of people considering how general the descriptions were in the survey suggesting that only the larger ethnic population were surveyed primarily.  I'm sure some participated but I doubt Brazilians were included considering their population here in the states are only in the few hundred thousands.

The survey did not included the Indians(India) and they have a much larger population than Brazilians here in the states. They are second largest immigrants in the U.S.A., second only to Mexicans.  Btw, Indians have a larger population than any Asian group today.  If they didn't included the Indians in the survey, then they definitely didn't included smaller ethnic populations such as Brazilians.

In general, "Latino" is understood as shorthand for the Spanish word latino americano (or the Portuguese latino-americano) and refers to (almost) anyone born in or with ancestors from Latin America and living in the U.S., including Brazilians.

Brazilians are not Latinos in Brazil, They only consider themselves Latinos outside Brazil. It's like a joke that we make about them.

Funny, please share some more Latin humor, I wouldn't be surprise if some Brazilians in Brazil do believe that they are not actually Latinos.

Brazilians are like Filipinos. Filipinos are technically located in Asia but don't consider themselves Asian at all. Some Filipinos identity as Hispanic or American over their Asian Identity.

Nope. Most Filipinos in the Philippines do consider themselves as Asian. Its mainly those outside of the country who don't see themselves as Asian.

When Filipinos are referred to as Asians they instantly get associated with East Asians so some pure Filipinos respond to them by saying that we are Filipinos but not Asians or not those Asians because we do not look and behave like them. Without a doubt we are considered Southeast Asians and we appear and behave more similar to people in the tropics. We are also seen as Pacific Islanders since we appear and behave more like them.

How ironic that blacks-Americans are the bottom of the anti-Asian movement.
