Another ship for the Vietnam Coast Guard and Vietnam People's Navy!
During his recent visit in Hanoi US Senator Jeff Merkley announced that the US was preparing to transfer a 3rd vessel to the Vietnam Coast Guard after having already transferred two ships previously. We've been predicting this to be the USCGC Mellon for awhile now and considering the fact that this the last remaining Hamilton-class cutter in the United States, its more than enough confirmation.
Mellon was decommissioned in 2020 and was originally suppose to be transferred to Bahrain. This never happened however and advocates from other nations kept suggesting that their own country compete with Vietnam to obtain the last US Hamilton-class cutter. We can ultimately see how that failed. The Vietnamese request for 3 Hamilton-class ships will finally be completed.
Defense Minister Phan Van Giang had also visited South Korea a few weeks ago. During that visit it was confirmed that the Republic of Korea Navy would transfer a 3rd vessel to the Vietnam People's Navy after having already done so with two Pohang-class corvettes twice previously. As based on the previous 2 transfers this is more than enough confirmation that a 3rd Pohang-class corvette will go to the VPN soon (though the retired Ulsan frigates would be pretty neat). According to Korean media all related procedures for the transfer were already underway.
