Topnotch chess player Wesley So earned another accolade after he was named among the world’s top earners in e-sports.
Esports (also known as electronic sports, or e-sports) is a form of sport competition using video games. Esports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as teams.
According to a philstar.com report, citing betting site Unikrn.com, Cavite-born Grandmaster, pocketed a total of $246,190 (approximately Php11,830,000) in tournament winnings for 2020 alone.
The whopping earnings placed So at No. 12 in the list of top earners.
So’s rival and World chess champion Magnus Carlsen was at No. 1 after bagging $510,587 (approximately Php24,538,000).
Another chess player in Hikaru Nakamura landed at No. 7.
The other top-ranked e-sports earners in the list from the second up to the sixth spot are occupied by Call of Duty players, the report said.
It was a busy 2020 year for So, who recaptured the US Chess Championships title to cap a very successful year.
