The Hmong have a recessive gene where some children are born with blonde hair. They are not albinos and they are not born this way due to lack of nutrition. Hmong do not have Indo European DNA. Sometimes the blonde turns to a brown or reddish color as children get older but sometimes it remains blonde even as adults.
Growing up most of us have heard stories from the elders how the original Hmong use to have blonde hair and were easily targeted and killed off in times of war in China during ancient times. In modern times you will see more blondes in the Hmong communities in Laos, Thailand & Vietnam than in China as the communities in SE Asia are more isolated in the mountains and do not inter-marry with the general population. Both parents need to have this recessive gene to create a blonde baby. It is not unusual to see a mother with black hair carrying a blonde baby. No one knows when the recessive gene was introduced in our lineage. The Hmong did not have a writing system so it’s only through oral stories passed down through the generations about the legends of the original blonde Hmong’s.
There are other Asians who also have blond hair, the Mongolians and those who traded along the Silk Road. We’ve watched a documentary where a blonde girl in Mongolia had her DNA matched with the Amazonians from ancient Greece. There was another documentary where auburn haired and tall Chinese men believed their ancestors may have been ancient Romans who had a fort there. But in this case after DNA tests there was no match.
We find this fascinating and hope one day someone will do more research and a documentary on the Blonde Hmong’s. Whether it was introduced thru intermarriage with other people’s in ancient times, genetic mutation or if Blondes are the original Hmong it doesn’t matter...Being Hmong is about language, culture and tradition.
There is no research on Blonde Hmongs. But for research on Hmong DNA please go to this link:

The Hmong are an ethnic group from the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. According to geneticists, there is a particular Hmong blond gene that it is completely different from the Caucasian one. So, thus contrary to assumptions, blond Hmong children are not the result of the mixing of the two groups of people (Caucasian and Eastern Asian) . In other Asian ethnicities, except Mongolians, there are no blond genes, so it is a very unique gene among the Hmong group. Some believed that this light hair is a symptom of albinism or malnutrition but these children do not differ from their parents by skin color and do not look ill-fed compared to the children who have dark hair instead.

Hmong with light hair :

This little girl's skin and eyes show us that she is not an albino, she still have a normal amount or melanina in her that make her look light olive skin but definitely not albino.

This 2 little sister don't have a significantly different amount of melanina in their skin compared to their brother. They just have lighter hairs.

This Hmong little girl is very light but she look healthy as the little boy near to her, doesn't look at all poorly fed.

Those Hmong little girls don't look significantly lighter skinned than their mother.

This little boy is definitely not albino.

This Hmong little girl only different in color from her sister because her hair are light brown.

This Hmong little blonde girls look as healthy and light skinned as the little brunettes girls.

This little girl's skin show us that she is definitely not an albino.

Adults Hmong with light features are very rare but there are:

Mongolians with light features :

This blonde Mongolian baby girl definetly don't look albino.

This little boy’s hair look as light as Scandinavians and definitely lighter than most French and German people’s blonde hair.

This girl is not blond but her natural eyes are still light blue. Same thing for this 2 adults :

Those are Mongolians with green eyes :

This Mongolian boy have really light green eyes, they look like my father ones.

This little girl is even blonde.

Naturally read head Mongolians :

Apparently Mongols are more likely to retain light traits even in adulthood, while the Hmong become progressively darker as they grow. In any case they are however, both groups, purely Asian and have developed their own gene for light eyes and hair.

I will let here some eastern Asians affected by Albinism so that you can compared them with light Hmong and light Mongolians.

Ps. There are people from Kazakhstan or other parts of Central Asia who have the facial characteristics of East Asians but with light hair and eyes, however these regions are located, like Kazakhstan, between East Asia and Russia so it is possible that they are a mix of the two peoples.
