This is a good documentary covering the history of black status in America from the civil rights movement to the incarceration policies over multiple US administrations.

Effective black leaders like Martin Luther King and Malcom X were smeared in public, pursued by FBI, then violently killed.

US incarcerates 2.3 million people, one quarter of the world's prison population. This number was just 300 thousand in the early 70's. Many blacks are in jail for minor, repeat offenses.

If one thinks the documentary contains liberal bias that ignores black crime, I can say the Chinese experience in Africa is that it doesn't have as much crime as portrayed in western media, and the incarceration is much less than in the US. Many young and old Chinese men and women live in Africa, some even acquire citizenship there.

The problems in US are caused by suppression of effective black communities, the promotion of blacks liked by whites rather than effective for blacks, and racist methods of control which evolved from slavery, to Jim Crow, to segregation, and finally to judicial incarceration.

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities... We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

John Ehrlichman- Nixon Advisor

Y'all don't quote me on this. You start out in 1954 by saying nigger, nigger, nigger. By 1968 you can't say nigger, that hurts you. It backfires. So you say stuff like forced-bussing, state's rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now. You're talking about cutting taxes and all of these things you're talking about are totally economic things and the by-product of them is blacks get hurt worse than whites.

Lee Atwater - Campaign strategist to Ronald Reagan
