The name Perperikon (Greek: Περπερικόν) dates from the Middle Ages – 11th–13th centuries. The original name Hyperperakion was shortened by scribes to Perperakion or Perperikon. There are at least two theories about the origin and meaning of the name, both associating it with gold-mining: The city may have been named after a medieval high-temperature gold-refining process (Medieval Greek hyperpyros), or the resumed use of a classical-era name for the site, derived from a word for altar-fire (ancient Greek hyperpyros).[1]

Easter Island: Older Than We Think?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What if the accepted timeline of Easter Island is backwards? I traveled to Rapa Nui to investigate the island’s giant moai, ancient roads, Rano Raraku quarry, the megalithic wall of Ahu Vinapu – and found lots of evidence that may point to a much older history than we’re being told. In this episode of Secrets in Stone, I travel to Easter Island / Rapa Nui to explore the deeper mysteries behind the island’s famous moai, the sacred quarry of Rano Raraku, the ancient roadways, and the extraordinary megalithic masonry of Ahu Vinapu. Rather than simply repeating the standard archaeological story, I look closely at the evidence used to date these monuments and ask whether some of the island’s largest and most sophisticated structures could represent an earlier phase of construction. We examine the enormous moai still standing and buried at Rano Raraku, including Moai 156 and 157, whose excavations revealed engineered bedrock installations, multiple phases of carving, later petroglyphs, and a much more complicated history than a single construction date suggests. We also look at the differences between the giant quarry moai, the statues erected on ahu, and the mysterious moai found along the ancient roads—along with the famous “walking moai” experiment and Katherine Routledge’s alternative idea that these roads may once have been monumental ceremonial avenues leading toward a sacred Rano Raraku. Then we look more broadly. Why does the mortarless, irregular basalt masonry at Vinapu look so similar to megalithic stonework in Peru? Why do the moai share such striking body proportions and hand positions with anthropomorphic monuments at Göbekli Tepe, Tiwanaku, and other ancient sites around the world? And why do Rapa Nui traditions preserve stories of a lost homeland called Hiva, seven explorers, supernatural power, sacred roads, and a new land remembered as the “Navel of the World”? This episode explores the possibility that Easter Island preserves multiple layers of construction, reuse, symbolism, and cultural memory—and asks whether the giant moai and megalithic structures of Rapa Nui could be older than the conventional archaeological timeline currently allows. If you accidentally torch your jewellery box, you will find a puddle of gold at the bottom. It might look ugly, but the metal is still there. You can scrape it up and resell it.

But the diamond? It won’t be there. Here is the chemistry. Because a diamond is pure carbon, it is essentially the world’s most expensive piece of coal. In a normal atmosphere, carbon doesn’t have a liquid phase. It doesn’t melt into a droplet like metal. Instead, once it hits about 850°C, it reacts with the oxygen in the air and simply turns into carbon dioxide. It doesn’t crack. It doesn’t turn to ash. It turns into invisible gas and floats out the window. You are literally watching your asset vaporise into thin air. This is why jewellers have to be incredibly careful when retipping prongs. If we get the torch too close to the stone without coating it in a protectant (like boric acid), the surface of the diamond will start to burn away.

Geneticists Revealed Kupe's Voyage Was Never A Myth | Here's What The DNA Shows For generations, Kupe has stood at the center of Māori oral tradition as the legendary navigator who voyaged across the Pacific and reached New Zealand. Yet for much of the twentieth century, influential scholars dismissed him as a mythical figure rather than a real historical person. This video explores how archaeological discoveries, ancient DNA, radiocarbon dating, isotope analysis, genomics, linguistics, and centuries-old oral genealogies are challenging that interpretation. At the Wairau Bar on New Zealand’s South Island, researchers studied some of the earliest known Polynesian settlers. Mitochondrial DNA revealed multiple East Polynesian maternal lineages, while radiocarbon evidence placed the settlement of New Zealand within a remarkably narrow period during the thirteenth century. Strontium isotope analysis further suggested that some of these early settlers were born outside New Zealand, connecting them to central East Polynesia. The video brings these findings together with Māori genealogies, Polynesian migration patterns, archaeological artifacts, place names associated with Kupe, and genomic evidence identifying the Society Islands as an important center of East Polynesian expansion. It also examines how earlier scholars correctly dismantled fabricated colonial-era chronologies but may have gone too far by dismissing Kupe himself.
