Protest leader and activist Cori Bushwon the election to Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, making her the state's first Black congresswoman.

Bush, a Democrat, easily defeated her little-known Republican challenger, Anthony Rogers, leading with 79% of the vote. She was essentially guaranteed a win after ousting longtime Rep. William Lacy Clay, who had held the seat since 2001, in Missouri’s Democratic primary earlier this year.

A nurse, pastor and single parent who spent several months living out of a car, Bush, 44, rose to prominence as a protest leader after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old, in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. She continued to speak out against police brutality and racial discrimination as nationwide protests erupted in the wake of George Floyd's death at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer.

A survivor of COVID-19, Bush and others wore masks as she thanked supporters after her win.

Who is Cori Bush? The nurse, pastor and activist ended a 52-year political dynasty

Congresswoman-elect Cori Bush speaks during her election-night watch party on November 3, 2020 at campaign headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. With tonight's victory, the Democrat Bush becomes the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress from the state of Missouri.

"Thank you for electing me as your first Black congresswoman here in the state of Missouri," she said. "That's bittersweet because, you know, it's 2020: Why am I the first in the whole state?"

Bush strongly supports the movement to "defund the police" and has said she would passionately advocate for that policy if she were elected to the House. She supports Medicare For All, the Green New Deal, and universal basic income as a remedy to the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, St. Louis Public Radio reported.

Bush lost a primary bid against Clay in 2018. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez strongly backed her that year but did not endorse her this time against Clay, who announced his support for the first-term congresswoman's Green New Deal in a statement that included a photo of himself standing beside her.

I support BLM and the green revolution but I dislike Universal Income. Its about gibz.

Not only is it lazy but its communism thats putting the burden on tax payers. Who will give the Universal Income, well the government, who's gonna pay, well the tax payers of course, and as we all know the welfare queens dont pay taxes and neither do the tax evading rich crackers parking their money in Swiss bank accounts. The middle class and the people who actually work will be squeezed.

I like that. People of color have long been under represented. Asians for example are majority of the world's population but Hollywood and media dont guve us rep.

UBI gives more power to labor, less power to capital

people have an option to refuse poor choices.

many creative people can work on community projects that don't really pay.

the world is awash with productivity, the problem is distribution

UBI is better than welfare: working cannot reduce your income

better than minimum wage: minimum wage drives up costs on the low end has no effect on high end. some jobs can't afford a high minimum wage.

everyone has base level income, will encourage communities to work together to address any social problems

VAT on goods and services.

it's not free money since everyone gets the same.

Robotics, AI will devalue many kinds of work. if you don't have "citizen income", many citizens will become worthless in the market. they can't fight technology and innovation, so they fight each other fight other people. that's your distopia.
