While looking thru YouTube for pop music, I realized something. Today's 'Cute' Japan didn't exist in the 70s or 80s. This Hello Kitty World Japan has only been around for the last two decades. Furthermore, I believe the social look is related to the mangas of the time. Whether manga is setting the trends or merely reflecting the existing trends of the time I do not know, but there is a strong correlation between the two and a dramatic change in the look of the girls since the 70s.

The 70s
The manga was very cartoonist with little effort to depict the human anatomy correctly. Often the characters had three fingers and a thumb. There is no over all sense of cuteness in the manga and the Idols of the time also reflect this. Idols of the 70s often debut at 15~18 yet none looked 15. People tried to look in their low 20s.

80s
The 80s is the period when manga looked the most realistic. It's also when Japanese anime solidified into their own unique style. Again, there is nothing over all that is cute about the era in general. Infact, some of the manga born in this time had a very masculine look to it.

Present Day
Today's manga are surreal. The body proportions are deliberately altered to produce a special look or feel. In many ways today's manga is much better than yesterday's. Today's manga also depicts girls in extreme cute ways such as round faces with extra large eyes suggesting baby-like features. Also the posters and clothing is extremely cute. Hence, I am not surprised that in real society, girls also look cute and youthful.

I have to say this drawing is just gorgeous.

I'm not judging if this is a bad trend or good tend. Any guy over 20 has no business telling teenage girls what they can or cannot wear.
I'm simply stating an observation since I think most people think Japan has always been into cute when in reality it is a very recent phenomena.

They use to show animes from the 80's that Japanese studios depicted from popular Western classic books in the Philippines.

Peter Pan (1980's)

Dog of Flanders (1970's)

Little Princess

Remi, Nobody's Boy (not sure what book it's from) (1970's)

I have the DVD of this ashamed to admit it. (Late 80's)  One time a girl I was dating went through my movies and she pulled it out and she had a big ass smile on her face and was like "WTF is this?"

Still my favorite anime of all time.  Late 80's.
