@james in fact all of Asia depend on these sea trade routes. the only people who would try to sabotage them, with little damage to themselves, would be you-know-whom

they have bases on other people's lands, due to cold war legacy and colonial legacy. Okinawan's have to put up with their soldiers and machinery everyday, they want the US out of there. the US is even developing "smart mines" that they want to put in Japanese waters; these mines would "self hunt" for ships.

There is a movement in the Philippines to bring back the US naval base but with a different agreement from the '90s where the US soldiers get special treatment from the local law.
